Troubleshooting Constant Reboots

Applies to: All NVR and DVR models

Issue: Unit restarts unexpectedly or enters a reboot loop.

Step 1: Verify the Power Supply

The most common cause of rebooting is insufficient voltage. Over time, power adapters can degrade, providing enough "juice" to turn the lights on, but not enough to spin the hard drive or run the processor.

  • Check the Specs: Ensure the adapter matches the unit’s requirements (usually 12V/2A or 12V/5A).

  • Swap the Plug: If you have an identical unit nearby, swap the power adapter to see if the rebooting follows the cable.

  • Avoid Power Strips: Plug the unit directly into a wall outlet or a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to rule out a faulty surge protector.

Step 2: Isolate the Hard Drive (HDD)

If a hard drive has bad sectors or a failing motor, it can draw excess power or cause the system software to "kernel panic" and restart.

  1. Power Down: Turn off the unit and unplug it.

  2. Disconnect the HDD: Open the casing and unplug the SATA power and data cables from the hard drive.

  3. Test Run: Power the unit back on without the hard drive.

    • If it stops rebooting: Your hard drive is faulty and needs replacement.

    • If it continues rebooting: Move to Step 3.

Step 3: Firmware Recovery

If the hardware is stable but the software is corrupted, a firmware update is your "last-stand" solution.

  • Check Version: Compare your current build in the System Settings to the latest version on the manufacturer’s support site.

  • Update via USB: Download the correct firmware file, put it on a FAT32-formatted USB drive, and perform the update through the local menu.

  • Factory Reset: After updating, perform a factory default reset to clear out any legacy configuration bugs.

⚠️ Warning: Never power off the unit during a firmware update, as this can permanently "brick" the device.
