General || Setting up E-mail account on a recorder using Google (Gmail)

This tutorial will show you how to add a Google mail account (Gmail) to a recorder to IP camera so that the client is able to receive notifications via Email, an example would be Motion Detection: If a camera detects motion, it will send out an email to the accounts added to the sender's list. Since Gmail is a very popular email client, we decided to include this brief tutorial on our Bookstack Wiki.

1. The very first thing you want to do is to of course have an account for Gmail if you have not done so. If you have, make sure that you can:

  • First, login to the Gmail account that will be attached to the recorder in sending out the emails for notifications. This is done so that you know that the password that the client/installer provided you with, works. This will also prevent time wasted on something that was never the issue, for example the recorder fails to send out notifications, you spend 30-45 minutes on trying to troubleshoot the issue when in fact, the whole time it was the wrong password.

2. On any recorder or electronic device that will let you add an email address for notifications, communications, etc, you will have to put in some information pertaining to the Email account that you are set to use. Usually, the values needed are:

  • SMTP Server - Google Gmail, this will be smtp.gmail.com
  • SMTP Port -  Google Gmail, (TLS = 587) (SSL = 465
  • Enable SSL/TLS - Some recorders required to check mark a box next to SSL/TLS if using this, which Gmail does use TLS (most of the time)
  • Authentication - ALL email clients use some form of Authentication. When you navigate to your Gmail webpage to login, that is Authentication. The username is the email address, ex. Henry.o@enssecurity.com Password is the password of your Gmail account, for ex: 187556O
